Hotel Check-In and Check-Out Times: Plan Your Arrival and Departure
By TripNoted · Updated October 30, 2026
Hotel check-in and check-out times differ by property. Read the times on your current booking, then plan in the hotel’s local time. Ask the property to confirm any early room access, late checkout, or bag storage before you plan around it.

1. Check your hotel’s posted times
Open the latest booking confirmation. Check the property name, address, stay dates, check-in time, and checkout time. If you booked through a travel seller, open that booking too. An older message may not show a later change.
Posted times differ. When checked for this guide, The Standard, London listed 3:00 p.m. check-in and noon checkout; Ruby Zoe Hotel London listed 3:00 p.m. and 11:00 a.m.; and London Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square listed 4:00 p.m. and noon. These are examples, not standard hotel hours. Check your current booking for your stay.
If you cannot find a time, or the current booking and property page differ, contact the property or the company that took the booking. Ask which time applies to your stay. Our hotel confirmation guide shows which details to check before you travel.
2. Plan the first hours around check-in
Compare the check-in time with when you expect to reach the hotel. Use the destination’s local date and time from your flight, train, or other travel plan. Add time for baggage collection and the trip from the station or airport. A flight landing time is not the same as your hotel arrival time.
If you will arrive early, ask whether the hotel can give you the room before its posted time. The Standard, London says early check-in depends on availability. It also lists luggage storage before check-in and for up to 24 hours after checkout. These are that hotel’s terms. Ask your own property what it can offer and when.
Build a first-day plan that works without the room. Choose a meal or nearby stop that you can visit with your bags, then plan more after check-in. If the hotel agrees to store your bags, follow its drop-off instructions and keep valuables with you.
If you will reach the hotel after midnight, use the local arrival date. A room needed at 1:00 a.m. on November 11 may need a booking that starts on November 10. Ask the property or seller which booked night covers room access before you change anything. Our late hotel check-in guide has more steps for that arrival.
3. Plan checkout day
Check the checkout time and local date. Pack before the morning, allow time to leave the room, and plan how you will reach your next stop. Your hotel checkout time and flight departure time are separate plans.
If you want to stay in the room later, ask about late checkout and use the new time only after the property confirms it. If your transport leaves later, ask whether the hotel can store your bags after checkout and when you must collect them. If it cannot, choose a stop that works with your bags or arrange another confirmed storage option.
For a flight across time zones, see how to read local times and overnight dates.
A fictional two-night stay, step by step
This example uses a hotel that confirms bag storage on both days. The booking lists check-in at 3:00 p.m. on November 10 and checkout at 11:00 a.m. on November 12. It covers the nights of November 10 and 11.
| Local date and time | Plan | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Nov 10, 10:00 a.m. | Reach the hotel five hours before check-in. | The hotel has agreed to store the bags until the room is ready. |
| Nov 10, 3:00 p.m. | Check in and collect the bags. | Use the hotel’s confirmed room access time. |
| Nov 11 | Stay for the full day and night. | Keep the next day’s checkout time in the plan. |
| Nov 12, 11:00 a.m. | Check out and leave the room. | The hotel has agreed to store the bags until 5:00 p.m. |
| Nov 12, 5:00 p.m. | Collect the bags before evening transport. | Follow the hotel’s confirmed collection instructions. |
The storage agreement in this example is fictional. For your trip, ask the hotel first. If it cannot store your bags, plan your first and last stops with the luggage you will have.

If the times do not fit your plans
If your arrival or departure falls outside the posted times, ask about the room or bag option you need. Until you have the hotel’s reply, plan the day around the times in your current booking. If your travel schedule changes, update the hotel plan and contact the property with your new arrival time.

Hotel check-in and check-out questions
Does a November 10–12 stay mean two nights?
Yes. In this example, the stay covers the nights of November 10 and 11. Checkout is on November 12 at the time shown in the booking.
Which time zone should I use for check-in?
Use the hotel’s local time. If the confirmation does not make the local time clear, ask the property before you travel.
Does a checkout date mean I can stay through that evening?
No. The checkout date is the day you leave the room. Use the time in your booking unless the property confirms a later time.
